Head Erosion with Emittance Growth in PWFA

چکیده
Head erosion is one of the limiting factors in plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA). We present a study of head erosion with emittance growth in field-ionized plasma from the PWFA experiments performed at the FACET user facility at SLAC. At FACET, a 20.3 GeV bunch with 1.8×10 electrons is optimized in beam transverse size and combined with a high density lithium plasma for beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiments. A target foil is inserted upstream of the plasma source to increase the bunch emittance through multiple scattering. Its effect on beamplasma interaction is observed with an energy spectrometer after a vertical bend magnet. Results from the first experiments show that increasing the emittance has suppressed vapor field-ionization and plasma wakefields excitation. Plans for the future are presented.

Several plasma accelerator concepts are reviewed, with emphasis on the Plasma Beat Wave Accelerator (PBWA) and the Plasma Wake Field Accelerator (PWFA). Various accelerator physics issues regarding these schemes are discussed, and numerical examples on laboratory scale experiments are given. The efficiency of plasma accelerators is then revealed with suggestions on improvements. Sources that ca...
متن کاملEmittance and Current of Electrons Trapped in a Plasma Wakefield Accelerator
In recent experiments plasma electrons became trapped in a plasma wakefield accelerator (PWFA). The transverse size of these trapped electrons on a downstream diagnostic yields an upper limit measurement of transverse normalized emittance divided by peak current, εN,x/I. The lowest upper limit for εN,x/I measured in the experiment is 1.3 ·10−10m/A.

Next-generation advanced-accelerators such as the PWFA, and beam-radiation interactions such as inverse-Compton scattering, depend on increased beam-density to achieve superior results. The photoinjector has enabled the production of high-brightness beams that are desirable for experiments with critical dependencies on bunch length and emittance. Along with the production of shorter and lower-e...
متن کاملReal Functions computed by Parametric Weighted Finite Automata
Weighted finite automata (WFA) are an extension of finite automata that can be used to compute real functions and parametric WFA (PWFA) are a multidimensional variant of WFA. This paper shows that each PWFA computable set is computable by a PWFA that has an alphabet cardinality of two. Further we show that real polynomials with solely rational coefficients can be computed by PWFA that do not us...
